I was taught use it when going over a pipe for extra protection. We also use it to protect the sealing tape leading up to end plates in stainless cases.

It's also used to protect the cable from the grounding stud that is added at openings.

Cant think of many other official uses. Pretty useful attaching rope to cables to pull them in.
