I use those cheap ass dollar store 1/4" tempered steel drain snakes and just fold/snap them to length...I've tried using the material from higher quality ones and they didn't sound as lively, something about the structure lets the cheap stuff resonate better.
When you snap them you can actually feel the material's crappy crystalline structure kind of crunch and delaminate as it fatigues and breaks.
