I have a common cut for the tang of my Spurdö Shanks (I'm trademarking this). I also tend make the tip of the tang into beveled blade too assist the burn-fit.

I'd say just a plain old band saw from whatever your equivalent to home depot is for wood. That way you don't need to make an ugly table like I did (which I mostly made on the band saw). This just works well for metal (loud as fuck) for my needs. I get three full size blanks from a bar with enough left over for a whittle knife, leather tool or a sieniveitsi.
