The 6-tons are pretty big. But this is also why I use the double locking guys whenever I’m actually getting under the car.

So it’s the newer red 3-ton stands only? I guess they shaved another 3¢ off with the new one and it was too far.

They’re fine. The same shit 3-ton stands is rebranded everywhere for ~$25. I have had a pair of 3-ton HF stands for years and they work as expected.

I shill for the ones at Northern Tool though, it’s the same design but they have a pin in addition to the ratcheting latch so they’re double locking. They go on sale a bit too, I got a pair of the 6-ton stands for $39.

IMO, go with 6-ton stands for the garage, even if you’re getting them from HF. I use the 3-ton for oil changes or brake jobs when I’m not really under the car completely, but the 6-ton double locking stands have a much wider footprint and are more stable when you need to lift the car high enough to work under there and might be yanking on stuff. If you use the 3-ton stands on an SUV and need to crawl under it, you’re going to have the things extended to the top notch and it doesn’t take a whole lot of lateral movement to make them shake real good like that.

Seems like a waste. Jack stands rarely fail and the pics people post on /o/ are like 95% user error.

Some 6-ton or 12-ton double locking or otherwise quality stands will make you feel a lot more comfortable under there. Not just the extra weight capacity, but the wider base and not having little stands fully extended is good when you need to really yank on stuff under the car. The red ones in pic related have the ratcheting lever like other stands, but also a pin to lock em in place. Also I always leave the jack just touching the car as backup.

Get some 6-ton stands.

I’m sure your project will work. I dislike being under little 3-ton stands as well when I’m really yanking on the wrench. I got these 6-ton stands from Northern Tool on sale for $40. They are way higher than the 3-ton stands and they have the wide footprint which means they’re far less likely to tip over somehow. They’re also double locking so they have the latch like all the other stands plus a pin that slides in for extra piece of mind.

Northern Tool has sales on their jacks and stands from time to time and they got some decent stuff there. Picked up these double locking 6-ton stands for $40 on sale so I didn’t have to trust my life to HF’s 3-ton
