So how hard is it to build your own house in North America? Back when my parents had their house built, the contractors refused to listen to them and did an absolute shit job. I'm concerned about letting a bunch of dick for brains build my house.

I have a lot of... very specific requests regarding materials, construction, and build quality. For example, my father wanted black iron pipes for the gas lines in his house, and the contractor basically said, "nah, we use corrugated stainless steel". Also, he wanted 12 gauge wire on all outlets, and the contractor said "nah, we're gonna use 14 gauge". Copper water pipes? nah fuck you, we're gonna use PEX. PVC waste pipes? nope fuck you, we're gonna use ABS. RJ-45 jacks in every room with Cat6 that all run back to a common point in the utility room? Nope RJ-11 with Cat5 (not even 5e).
