I used 3D printed backers with addressable LEDs and 3D printed diffusers. You can use the rope lights now which in my opinion do a way better job diffusing. For the backer you're better off finding a website that will cut you a custom sized piece and deliver or use McMaster Carr.

It's called a microcontroller, or uC. Basically, in most electronics they're controlled this way since using discretes and 555's take up too much room.

Also, I like your picture. It reminds me of the "neon" sign I made that coincidentally has an Arduino to control the LEDs.

I love the 80's because future aesthetics have never been as good. The people in the 80's believed the future was right around the corner and were getting ready by dressing in future clothing and decorating their houses for the future.

Here's a home made neon sign stylized after 80's new wave synth pop band FM-84.
