Unstated was the goal of use case here is to *eliminate* the need to remove the battery. Just charge it every so often.
More I think about it, though, I'm just replacing one problem with another. The 9V alkaline batteries last a long time in storage. Chances are the 9V rechargable would be dead over same amount of time.
Eh, I'm done screwing with it. Back to the owner. Here's a pic of front of board; no good shots of back, but it's a single IC. Traces pulling off the board; had to get out my wirewrap kit for first time in ~20 years to fix broken traces.
