Metallic lead has very low bioavailability and usually doesn’t stick around in the body because it’s not water soluble and it just passes through. The “toxic” form of lead is when it becomes ionized as a salt (Pb2+) as in leaded paints or following the use of bore solvent when cleaning guns. These ions are water soluble and readily absorbed into the body where they cause neurotoxic effects. Our bodies confuse the lead for calcium and don’t actively excrete the ions too. Our cells even incorporate lead into bone instead of calcium which can temporarily sequester it. However later in life (especially in women) if someone develops osteoporosis this lead can be released back into the bloodstream where it poisons the brain. This is one theory behind early onset dementia. >>2504486
