they actually didn't create it, most countries (even cities) had their own special snowflake version of imperial units before they threw it out and adopted an international and consistent measurement system, which happend in the late 18th century in most of europe
to further illustrate the point, a british inch was different from an american inch as late as the 50's, and a british gallon today is different from an american gallon but i think in the UK they mostly use litres now

the answer to these are probably trivial which is why US customary has spread around the globe instead of the stupidity of making everything divisable by 10

british gallon is different though, luckily. because we all know the UK actually uses the legit imperial system and not some cheap knockoff

ok but could you explain why quite a lot of countries abandoned their old measurement system and switched to metric instead?
or if you could tell me how many countries stopped using the metric system and switched to something better that would be great
