I've never tried a handheld circular saw with metal but I currently use a grinding disk in a small miter saw. It's better than a hand held grinder but hardly optimal. Lots of noise, the arbor is slightly wrong sized, it's slow, the plastic tray melts, the blade tries to bend out of the way if you're taking off only a couple mm, it's messy, and you have to attend it the whole time. It works though and is accurate and cheap.

I used to have pic related until I moved overseas and switched to my current method. It was marvelous. Set and forget, could cut off as little as 3mm at a time, cool and fairly clean, and only as loud as a drill press. I absolutely suggest a horizontal bandsaw if you intend on cutting every day. HF was fine for every day use for me but might wear out if you're a professional.

I do not suggest a vertical band saw for this application. I've tried them and they are not ideal for cutting stuff like L-irons and tubing.

Mine should be even easier to build since the 4x6 saws are already powered by a 110v AC motor. I just need to get er done.
