>The Xbee Pro claims to be able to send data up to 15 miles?

I think that's under wildly optimum conditions with awesome antennas. I use Xbee Pros in a real-world environment and they easily connect over 1/4 mile through dense foliage even in heavy rain. I have Yagis from Pasadena that were about 20 or 30 dollars each; about a foot and a half long.

Since you cannot see one from the other, I had to guess a bit with the aiming, and once they worked I didn't fine tune any further. The Xbee has a cool feature where you can ask it what was the signal strength for the last packet.

Pic related is my Yagi from here http://www.wlanparts.com/antennas-900mh/900-mhz-yagi-antenna-10dbi/
