This is a result of people having access to computers. You wouldn't be calculating everything if you only had a slide rule and some tables. Engineering is not science and too many people think that if you use complex mathematical models to describe your problems somehow your answer is an absolute truth because look how precise it is. Meanwhile in reality tolerances are usually in 10-20% range if you even get provided with them in the first place. Pic related was designed in year of our lord 1248. Immediately throwing complex math at a problem is usually not the right approach. A model should be complex enough, approximations and empirical findings are fine, we're doing engineering, not science.
