Thanks. I'm not using anything really to limit voltage. When you spin it up the motor I'm using so so small that it doesn't get high enough to harm or overcharge the battery. Also, the tiny PCB you see with the LED on it came out of a solar light used for walkways. I was using it to test how fast the turbine needed to spin in the wind before it would produce enough power to charge the battery. When the light goes out it means the turbine is spinning fast enough to produce enough voltage to charge the battery. It was a lot better system than walking around with my bulk multimeter trying to get readings.

Here's another scrap wind turbine I made. These little things are quite effective, even in low winds. They are kind of useless for anything other than charging 1 AA battery, due to the motor size and wind turbine size.

However, I used then to learn a great deal about designing wind turbines and where to place them around my property and on my house for optimal wind.

On the matter of voltage limiting. I have other stuff to produce power, like a stationary bicycle. I bought a solar charge regulator and it does very well to limit several inputs for charging 12v, 24v, and 48v battery arrays. I can hook car batteries to it or rechargeable AA batteries to it and it will charge them so long as I provide power. This is the reason I do lots of salvaging, so I can learn a great deal without expending lots of money.

The best ones are ones that output the correct voltage for charging the battery/battery array you want to use. I.E. that means getting a motor that can charge over the voltage. Like for a 12v battery you need 14.7v to 15v generator output, which would be ideal. For a 1.5v AA battery, you'd need around 1.8v generator output to charge it.

Here's another one I made with a CD/DVD-ROM motor. It outputs about 2 volts max in high winds before the VAWT falls apart. The best thing I've learned from these small tests has been that you need to have a pulley system and a larger wind turbine so it'll have more torque in order to get the motor spinning far faster. Direct drive won't spin it nearly as fast, but you can have a smaller VAWT/HAWT since it doesn't need much torque when under load.

Right now, I'm designing a far larger one from an old record player motor (12v) and the turn table. The turntable has a huge belt and pulley and really get the motor spinning like crazy for 25v 8mA. That's enough to light up a lot of LEDs and charge a few AA batteries.
