never buy a soldering iron at a hardware store. you need to find a proper electronics store, or online. you can get 'em as cheap as $6 but if you want something that's fool-proof then you need a Weller, either a WP-25 or WP-35. the latter is 35W so it's better for heavier wiring duties, whereas the 25W is for PCBs. and you need 2 tips, a conical like the ST6 and a flat like the ST1. when you buy it, it will usually come with an ST1 or similar.
