Australian machinist here, most people I work with use the metric system but I find it pretty cumbersome for most work. thou for general machine work and tenths for tool & die or scraping. Most of my measuring tools are imperial and nearly all my indicators are imperial. in terms of metric indicators I've only ever owned 0.01mm indicators which are good for dialing in work on the lathe but not really accurate enough for scraping which is my main hobby. I just googles and found a 0.001mm indicator but seems like it would be impractical.

I stock an enormous amount of of BSF and BSW tooling and I've found that BSF is a nice middleground between UNF and UNF. Not excessively fine but not course enough to limit the wall thickness of a part. I also tap stripped metric threads to imperial threads and Vice versa when the stripped hole matches the tapping size of a fastener I have on hand..

>both systems have merit and there's no need to shit on either, I tap stripped metric threads to imperial threads and Vice versa.

I do a similar job for a friend of mine where I take a 50mm long m12x1.5mm bolt and drill it all the way through with a 7.5mm drill bit. Has to be dead straight as this is a drill guide for a long series drill. before I drill I also machine the hex down to 12mm because the standard socket won't fit in the bore of where these go. Been charging $8 AUD a bolt and get gets 10-12 made at a time.

He's very wealthy and very cheap, how much do you think I could charge that would still be well under the average machine shops rate?
