But, uh, yeah, I needed some buffers for an optical encoder. *A* buffer, rather.

I ended up buying a full reel of 2500 because I have a problem, I think.

...because fresh alumina is a more aggressive grit than carbide or diamond. You're getting more sparks because you're removing more material.

Also:

(For anyone who doesn't know, using diamond to grind anything with iron in it will cause it to dissolve, ruining your expensive wheel. You can grind steel with diamond only if you're using coolant and going so slow that you might as well be using some other abrasive.)
