Pardon my ignorance... what exactly are these zone numbers, and what do they mean? Where would I find information about them? Maybe some kind of chart for the best plants per zone number?

My girlfriend wants to get into growing plants, and I thought that a good Valentine's Day gift would be something like what you're doing, only maybe smaller. Start her off with 2-3 different plants. What do you guys think?
