Recently learned how to reliably get fishing line over a 100 ft tree limb with only a $20 target shooting crossbow from Dicks, and 4lb-rated fishing line. if I had a fly fishing reel it would be much easier to mount and rewind the line, but I make do, with the occasional tangle of course. The trick is to thread the line through the spool's far side, and hold the near side of the spool facing your target with your free hand, allowing for smooth dispersion of line without a more sophisticated mechanism. Tried a few other methods first, involving a slingshot with a spool mount that had a guide to keep the line from going off the spool, couldn't get that to work, so I bought the cheapest crossbow I could find and tried some desperate methods like throwing the spool in the air while shooting to no avail, until I realized how neatly and resistance-free the line slid when given a slight arch to wrap around the spool.
Using the fishing line, I pulled up twine which will hold up a length of wire for an experiment.
