i dont know if this on topic or not but i was wonder how the fuck did they used to build houses 200-300 years ago?

i live in a place where theres a lot of 200 year old houses and im wondering like how the fuck did they build basements and shit? did they really dig 20 feet deep into the ground by hand and shovel and shit and perfectly level it and everything and lay down stone and concrete and shit?
