There are about an infinite number of uses for an old desktop.

>store useful information (survival, canning, pictures)
>torrenting
>watch movies/videos/webms
>spreadsheets to track exercise/diet
>read/listen to ebooks
>play MUD/text based games
>draw anything in MSpaint
>browse the internet
you might just not be resourceful enough to see the glory of a PC that can still boot up, but don't go around telling people that they are useless. If you are concerned about electricity usage, why don't you swap out the PSU instead of buying a whole new computer.
