Finished my Electronics workbench last year. I regret not making the table have more depth, but the power strip has made things unbelievably easier.

I'm in the same situation. The first thing you should do is build multiple workbenches and fill the entire garage with shelving/storage cabinets. I just finished my electronics bench, and i'm working on my hammer shit bench.

I just got done making an electronics workbench. I thought i'd go the inexpensive route and just use 2x4's but i was wrong. Even though it's 100% ok for electronics work, the bench just 'feels' rickety. I'd take the other's advice and beef up your bench. If you're gonna hammer on the bench and want to save some money you can glue random plywood together to make an 1" thick bastard. I've done that before, wasn't pretty, but it was solid.
