Do you have a detent pin or hog ring?

Other anon mentioned the HF sockets, they’re ok but the cheap ones don’t fit in certain tight spots because the walls are real thick to compensate for shitty metal. I think it comes down to CR-V vs CrMo.

Pic related. The bigger one is a cheaper socket, you can see the goofy taper on top and it looks like a dong and has thicker walls. Sometimes they don’t fit in spots that a chrome socket will fit.

Gearwrench and Sunex will both sell you nice impact sockets for a reasonable price. If you go on Amazon, SATA is basically an Amazon house brand made by GW and there are some deals to be had on those sets. People shill Tekton, and their stuff is decent but their cheaper impact sockets have the shitty taper. The work 95%+ of the time, but when they don’t fit, you will be mad at yourself for being a cheapass.

If you do go with impact-only sockets to start, I gotta say don’t do the Tektons. Most of their stuff is good, but their impact sockets are cheap. They work, but they’re inexpensive since they use a cheaper manufacturing process. When you get to the smaller sizes (10mm in 1/2” drive, 8mm in 3/8” drive), the cheaper ones like Tekton are designed like the one on the left, it’s cheaper to make and can use cheaper steel while having some strength, but you will run into spots where they don’t fit. Gearwrench and Sunex are a step above but still affordable, they use the proper steel and the sockets have thinner walls and will fit in all of the spots you need them to fit. Watch the prices on Gearwrench stuff on Amazon, I got a steal on a 3/8” drive impact socket set on black friday a couple years ago, it was like $60-$70 for a set that should easily run $120+.

Another pic of the cheaper CR-V socket on the left, better CR-MO on the right. The walls are normally thinner on the good ones too, I have seen cheap impact sockets that won’t fit inside the recess on a wheel to remove lugnuts because the walls of the socket are so poorly machined and overly thick to make up for the lesser metal.

It’s not really about rounding nuts, impact sockets are different because the shock from the impact can cause cracks in hardened chrome sockets so the black impact rated sockets need to be slightly softer and less brittle.
