I once made a soap-box racer by duct taping a skateboard to the floor rest of a hand truck. It had a state-of-the-art cardboard cabin with a kitchen thermometer speedometer sticking straight out the front. Steering was done via pushing the rear of the skateboard left or right with your bare hands and for maximum aerodynamics, you'd be laying down head-first. Oh yeah, and there were no brakes, because brakes are for bitches. The hill I rode it down was almost a half-mile with a blind turn for traffic at the end. I can't believe I survived my childhood antics.
