Not an expert by any means - but from what I know from doing woodworking at school:

You can make a simple box by using finger joins (pic related) for all the sides and then adding a top and bottom.
To make the finger joints you'll want to use a coping saw, if you look at pics you'll see it has a big arch over the blade which allows you to cut at any angle, unlike a regular saw where the big metal blade would get in the way.
You basically mark out the fingers and then hack away all the wood you can out of them using the coping saw, then use a file to remove any excess and clean them up. Then you piece the box together, add glue between the joints and clamp. You can then glue + nail a thin sheet of MDF to the bottom of the box as a base, and then make some kind of lid for the top.
