Use laminated MDF to keep it clean and easy or sheathing plywood and framing studs to keep it cheap but thicc. 3/4" or above for the desktop, 1/2" or above for the sides, 3/16" or above for dividers and shelves inside the boxes. Will try to dig up an old minimalist-style furniture set I designed a while back, but the point is that the back panel can be safely mounted to a bunch of wall studs if you use about 2-3 lag bolts for each one. The back panel can be about 1/2" if you reinforce the ends to allow the side panels to be screwed against them, thus giving them better support against breaking off the wall under a load. The desktop can completely cover all upright pieces, and you can get away with using angle brackets underneath it to keep the surface untouched.
