The workbench all my tools sit on is ~20mm plywood. It was basically the cheapest, thickest shit I could buy at Home Depot that wasn't covered in knotholes. It's not too bad, all things considered. That bench is only about 24" wide, though.

The actual, big worktable I use is an MDF torsion box 5.5" thick. Very stronk, but very heavy. No fancy bullshit, just screws and glue. I didn't actually top it with anything, but I'd probably use either hardboard or thin, hardwood ply.
