Lap joint with grove into the plank. Insert the dowel. Glue. Drill pilot holes, install screws.

Here's some drill bits for wood I made from nails. The flat one works much better than the twisted one for making a circular hole. But, the twisted one does better at removing swarf. I make these when I don't have just the right diameter drill bit.

How does a drill bit bend like that? All I've ever seen or used snap and have very little deflection in the first place. I don't even think you can get them hot enough from normal drilling to anneal them enough to allow bending.

I mean how cheap do you have to go to find something like that?
