I'm guessing he thought it would be clever to build a Craftsman style house because he's such a great craft$man.
My understanding is it's an odd lot (not looking it up, don't care enough) and he had to shoehorn something into the lot. That fucked up all the angles and proportions and I guess he's using the odd lot to justify making a monstrosity instead of being a craftsman and making it seamlessly fit.
