Either works well. Also, I don't think he changed from hardwood to softwood, I think it was a different mortise hole.

Nothing wrong with new plane by LN is pricey (>300$). You can find a used stanley for far much cheaper. Youre going to need some supplies:
Some flat glass or natural tile that is flat on all of the top.
sand paper to remove rust.
Sharpening plates to sharpen the blade, and correct any problems.

altogether you're looking at mabye 150 including the sharpening plates (which you would need in any event).

I did get a LN router plane, and I love it. THe price the new router plane was the same price as an old, rusted thing on Ebay. But for #4 planes, ebay is the way.
