> fan wasn't ducted to anything.

It doesn't need to be ducted to anything, a whole house attic vent fan draws cool air into
and throughout the house and blows it into the attic, where forces out the hot air thru roof
vents or gable end vents.

Had one in my last house and _loved it_ (major electric bill savings in the summer) and
plan on installing one in my current house, as well as utilizing the opening in the ceiling
to spray-foam insulate the attic prior to installing the fan.

>It was just sucking air from the attic and blowing it into the house.

Wait a second, it... was installed UPSIDE-DOWN?!
