dude ive had the $20 variable speed Chicago Electric rotary tool for years and it is amazing. you might want some better bits but these have been working fine for me. ive cut holes in pc cases, polished jewelery, stripped paint and metal, installed a preamp in a guitar, hell, i cant even remember how often ive used it and ive never had a problem. fully variable from 8k to 35k rpm.

if you really want something fancy i heard a lot of guys buy this: http://www.harborfreight.com/flexible-shaft-grinder-and-carver-40432.html and replace the end with a Foredom 44t.

2 speed dremel is a waste IMO
