Surprisingly they look so well able to pinch and mash parts of my hand that I have always been extra cautious using them. However, I have lightly injured myself in a number of ways when releasing them and the handle suddenly *SPRAAAANG!!!* and of all those occasions, one time happened to be through my jeans slapping one of my nuts. I must say that the still in your image is the worst one for the design of the release lever. The ones where you must pull on the lever towards the other handle side are much easier to release slowly.

I never had a specialized use for those. I just use them for when I can't get a grip on something oddly shaped during one-time applications/projects.

A friend of mine saw a guy impaled and killed from kickback while he was working a table saw. The board that shot out went through his belly. He was standing directly in the wrong place while working on the wood and wasn't using the proper tools to feed the wood through.
