I see... so instead of cutting your stringers at all you could have made your steps 3 inches shorter and nailed a 2x4 to your stringer for the steps to sit on and get nailed too, I couldn’t find a decent picture but you pretty much mark your stringer out and then nail a block an inch and a half below your right angle cut line
