>clinging to 30 year old hardware
Only the ports.
While they are as costly as back then, the insides are hollowed out and replaced by glorified hackRFs.

Icom 705 is overpriced junk. Saying "inb4" doesn't negate it.

>705 is great if you want to go portable and QRP
The 705 is a failed attempt of a rebranded 706.
Only corporate boot licking morons pay 4 figures for qrp.

It's growing on me - or at least the trajectory of SDR. I think it's the stark contrast between the IC-706 and IC-705, along with the cost. I would have thought 25 years of computer and electronic advancements would have carried over to the ham hobby. Mad respect to you QRP guys, but a company bragging about 10 watts just gets under my skin - especially when I'm contemplating 1,000w. On the otherhand, I've begun to appreciate the barrier to entry (in both cost and education) that keeps some of the goofs off the air.
There's a similar setup already for < $800

I can't wait!
I have 3 on pre-order even though I don't know how much they'll cost or when they'll be available.
