Also more googling seems to say no. They’re made by Danaher, who used to make Craftsman ratchets I think. The pic of their older 60T looks exactly like the old Craftsman 36T, and the 88 looks like a new design, although some of the lines look similar to Gearwrench/Apex ratchets. Open it up and you will see. Those Craftsman/Danaher ratchets like the Matco 60 had a different mechanism than Gearwrench, similar to the older Snap On 936 ratchets

Do you already have it apart in that pic? How much more do you need to take it apart?

Remember that Craftsman never really manufactured their own tools, so that ratchet was made by some other manufacturer and maybe you can find more info if you figure that out.

I never had that problem with the reverse switch on the Craftsman ratchets. I have one 1/4” Kobalt 72T as well and no issue there (aside from the giant fucking head). The one ratchet where I have an issue with the switch going back and forth on its own is a Duralast 72T, which is a shame because I really like that ratchet aside from that, it’s basically a Snap On knockoff and the head is real small which is great on the 1/4”.

>wobble extensions with knurled grips
>multiple u-joints
>proper deep and 6pt sockets
>3 spark plug sockets
>doesn’t look to skip sizes

Those ratchets plus some other stuff make me think it’s the Apex-Gearwrench type stuff, which is good Taiwan made for the weekender and there’s not much better on a budget without having to spend $$$ on stuff made in first world countries.

Being expensive for what you get isn’t the same as being crappy. Like other anon said, so much of the Taiwan stuff comes out of a couple factories. Look at the Taiwan ratchets, there’s 3 or 4 different mechanism that are sold across dozens of different brands and basically make up all of the mid-range socket sets sold. Pic related, you can see how the Husky from Home Depot is the same design as some of the Craftsmans and the Gearwrench, and the Kobalt is the same as the Pittsburgh ratchets, and that Duralast is a 3rd design that is a ripoff of Snap On and the older Craftsman US design but made in Taiwan and that is seen in some other Taiwan brands too.

And 3/8” is probably the most commonly used drive size for me and a lot of people doing /o/ related stuff. I use 3/8” for almost everything under the hood because it works well for 8mm-19mm. 1/2” drive doesn’t come out until I’m doing some suspension stuff, and 1/4”, I normally use a screwdriver instead.

Anyway, those Taiwan tools have all gotten pretty damn good. You would be amazed how many mechanics are using Taiwan ratchets and sockets all day at work. If it’s good enough for those guys, it will last you years and years at home.

Clean and oil your Snappy.

The 72T Pitt Pro has real low resistance too, I think part of it is the pawls only gripping a few teeth. I gotta take another pic with the Tekton 90T and maybe try out an Icon and borrow an F80. Who wants to donate to the ratchet teardown fund? Would like to get a new Craftsman apart too.

They said this a year or two ago when Trump started talking, but it didn’t really happen.

I have heard that from people who were stuck on the old style Craftsman or even Snappy ratchets forever, it’s common across a lot of those Taiwan ratchets that all use the same design. The 72T Kobalt, Tekton, and Pitt ratchets are all the same exact mechanism inside. I forget which way the Gearwrench type goes.

To expand...

If you don’t want to buy the whole big kit, go online and see if your local Advance Auto has the regular ones in stock. 3/8” drive 84T is like $25, $30 for the 120T. Use the online ordering and 25% off code and pick up 20min later in store for like $20. They’re both butter when compared to cheap 24T round heads or 36T Craftsmans. The 120XP is slightly smoother at the cost of a thicker head, and I never ran into a situation where I needed the 3deg arc because 4.5 wouldn’t cut it.

I highly recommend the flex heads though. The longer handle and flex head makes them so much more useful. Amazon has good prices on all the individual GW stuff and kits.

Tekton and HF Pitt Pro are both 72T and ok, but the plastic F/R switch bugs me. Kobalt 72T ratchets are the same design. Home Depot’s 72T Husky ratchets are nice, just like the GW design, smooth and thin, but they have a quick release. They sell flex heads too. And the newer VatoZone Duralast 72T ratchets are pretty good too, basically a Snap On ripoff. I have a 1/4” flex head from there and like it a lot.

There are some new 90T designs from Craftsman and such and they look straight, but I believe many of those are sealed and can’t be taken apart without ruining them, so you can never grease them or clean them. Not that this will really matter on a $25 ratchet for a weekend warrior, but it’s a nice option to have.

People seem to love em. I have an 84T and a 120T both regular 3/8” drive and they are straight so far. They get a lot more tooth engagement than the Pitt Pro style. And the 84T is the same design used across tons of different brands that people don’t have many issues with. Pitt Pro and other 72T HF ratchets are the same design as the Kobalt and Tekton ratchets, all Taiwanese.

You can see that Duralast in this pic. Same design as the Williams which is basically a Snappy, and real close to the old school Craftsman design. Those new ratchets in the pic look exactly like the Duralasts which are really affordable, the 1/4” flex head was $20-$25. The head is about as thick as the current Pitt ratchets (thicker than GW) but the width of the face is quite a bit smaller.

Anyway after reading reviews on these things, people rarely seem to destroy ratchets without being complete fucking animals. If they have a quick release, the square always shears before any internals go.
