Turning operations are done with a lathe. Lathes are somewhat unique in their operation. The workpiece moves in a rotation at a certain speed. The speed of the workpiece is determined by the tool, operation being performed, and the material of the workpiece.

Turning operations are used for cylindrical or conical parts. Single point tools are generally used.

Types of turning operations:
Straight turning
Taper turning
Contour turning
Facing
Forming
Necking
Parting
Boring
Threading
Knurling

Some non-turning specific functions can be performed as well with capable machines, such as grinding, reaming, or drilling.
