a surface conditioning tool with a scotchbrite drum is the sensible way to cut a straight and even scratch pattern into stainless. take the handle off the door, take the door off the fridge and lay it down flat, cause the tool can get a bit frisky.
sandpaper and a steady hand will get you to the same place eventually, with a lot more sweat.
don't use a plain steel brush wheel, or any wheel that's touched non-stainless steel before, it will embed microscopic flakes of non-stainless steel in the surface and you'll get a zillion tiny rust spots.
