For a deck post where the post sits on a footing underground, should I backfill with dirt or gravel? When it rains, the water pools in that area and the holes can have water in them for a week. If we have a rainy period then it could be a month before the holes dry. I see people say I should use gravel then for the drainage but won't that just mean more water pooling around the post?
if gravel, can I backfill the bottom few inches with gravel and the rest with dirt? Because gravel is expensive...
