The best solution I found, for best IQ, was that slider in the image I posted. It isn't the perfect solution. With very long focal lengths, you can use an iris. For instance, a 565mm focal length will have an optimal pinhole size of 1mm. That's getting close to 2 feet long, but an iris for 1mm and larger is easy enough to make. The circles-of-confusion won't be perfect and it will be a bit blurrier because of that, but workable.
