When I build my house, I'm doing a 12" thick basement wall pour.

Fallout shelters ftw.

Well, I happen to know something about this subject. My father was an RO, now NRC, and my sister was an Aux Operator and is now RP.

>Alpha, stopped by skin. Ingestation can cause buildup in the body, cooking yourself from the inside out. Prolonged contact can cause burns. Filter your air and wear protective garments.

>Beta, stopped by most protective garments. It's a lot like alpha, just a little more powerful.

>Gamma, you're fucked. 12" of concrete only slows it down, it won't stop it completely. The best protection against gamma radiation is...WATER! Line your shelter with 5-gal jugs of water. Not only do you have drinking water, but you also have gamma radiation protection. The water will attenuate the gamma and render it harmless. As the gamma threat decreases, so will your water supplies as you consume the water. So it works out.

Decontamination is nothing fancy. Dry particles can be removed with tape. A shower works okay as well, just be sure to use an abrasive soap. New entry people should stay outside the shelter for about an hour so that short lived radioactive gasses can dissipate and half-live out.
