Yeah I get it about brewing in glass over plastic. I did however find people could not tell a difference using stainless steel. Plastic like OP's let air exchange from what I have read but I heard better bottles work well. I like using barrels as its just easier to do it as the same amount of glass would take up a huge amount of space.Someday a decent huge stainless tank will arrive on CL so maybe some day. Sucks to be so rural but most people would have access to CL or local shops to call up and find barrels. Even if there are just local restaurants 5 gallon buckets can be had for a dollar or less. If op's method used looser fitting stuff and allowed the mission clamp to pop off easier under a clog situation I think it would increase safety factor. I do like blow off tubes compared to little airlocks like the ones posted just need to safety that one up a little bit
