I recently tried my hand at redneck chainsaw milling. That is to say no alaska mill, no ripping chain and also it was an ash that was laying on the side of a back road. I'm an arborist and I consider myself very competent with a saw but I'd never milled before. I was interested in milling out a large slab to turn into a desk project. I'd recently dropped my grandparents 80 foot ash (emerald ash borer) and cut out several large slices from the base which I plan on making into an annotated table for them based on ring counting. I wanted to practice working with ash wood and using a router sled for flattening. This first cut went okay. Didn't use wedges and the bar pinched and broke a chain. Used a smaller saw to finish the job. Later for the second cut we came back with ripping chain and it was a bit better than regular chain. I also tried and failed to file my own skipping chain. The finish is extremely rough but I'm planning on finishing it with a router sled not a planer so I'm not too worried.

The 3120 pinched and broke the blade so we had to finish with a few smaller saws and also a car jack, a 5 foot iron bar, a cant hook, and also we used a sledgehammer to try to get it off.
