>what does "use the guard correctly" mean
If the wheel explodes or throws things, they will move out from the wheel along something between a radial and a tangent path. Make sure that the guard is between you and those paths.

Besides what the other anon mentioned, I would recommend hearing protection and possibly a dust mask. A kneeling pad or kneepads will let you position yourself comfortably on hard ground, so you can concentrate on the cut rather than a stone poking your kneecap. Make a shallow precise groove along the line, then use that to help guide the disk for the through cut. Binding of the blade is the usual cause of breakage, which can come from crooked cuts and/or the metal pinching it. So set up the cut so that the pole doesn't rest its weight on the disk as you come towards the end of the cut. Position the grinder so that if it binds and kicks, it will try to move in a way that won't put you in danger. The cheapo HF one may not have the power to get away from you, but keep a firm balanced grip. I would advise against cutting with a thick disk (it will take a lot longer with more pressure, and fatigue in an awkward position is a bad thing). Just get a thin disk from a good manufacturer. Be sure to clear the area of flammable stuff, or bring a fire extinguisher along if that's not feasible. The cut edges will be sharp, and the cut pieces will be hot, so leather gloves would be a good idea. They can also reduce felt vibration from the likely-loose tolerances in the grinder.
