We DO NOT use earth ground as a 0 potential reference in a DC system.

Depends on what you mean by DC system.

PC power supplies have their negative tied to earth.

It is also common practice in control cabinets.

A lot of PLC manufactures prefer to have a grounded negative.

In an S7-300 configuration with grounded reference potential occurring interference
current is dissipated to the ground conductor/ to ground.
