OP, what you need is a plaster board.

Sucks the water out of the clay faster than you can say 'shit I trimmed through my pot'.

Also I really have to applaud you on your full DIY technique, I've only had access to pre-mixed clay from Great Lakes Clay, commercial glazes, and electric kilns, so doing it primitive is neato to see. GODSPEED.

A sample of the better mugs/handled cups I threw during independent study recently, pardon the shit lighting. Still not competent at photography.

Also looking into cheap wheels or plans to make an electric wheel of my own, but I don't see pottery threads on /diy/ so I'm guessing it isn't a big thing.
