Using an orbital sander is ideal. You should have no problems if you choose a paper of appropriate grit for the job. Avoid using a belt sander unless you're skilled at operating it, however. You can dig huge ruts any soft wood extremely fast with a belt sander.

I have no clue about masks, though.
