Just solder them, or, if low current, use 18650 holders for them (picrel) or use/make ones with better cell contact.
When soldering, sink the heat away from the cell body and do it quickly.
Welding them on (oneself) is a meme, welding tabs is done in the factory to save money and time.
Also cells can come with tabs already welded on there.

Lots of people successfully solder them—just be careful not to get them too hot. In the end, it’s not that different from an electrolytic capacitor.
Or get them with tabs.
Or use flat lipo4 batteries.

The reason they are spot welded is it is cheaper (no solder) and a lot faster.

The reason they’re not in holders as in picrel is because spot welding supports higher current.

So, if you’re doing thousands of these things and you’re drawing more than 1 Amp from each cell… by all means, go for spot welding. For everyone else, it’s a meme.

Why not buy some holders for the 18650s and make your own pack?

Then, if one of them goes wrong, you can just replace that cell easily.
I have several old packs and I keep them in hopes that one day I’ll get to take on this project for myself.
I think it’s crazy how these are made to the point where it’s a scam.
