I think he started with the flail design, then designed the sword arms to fit the same base and still be effective. I'm pretty sure his design limitations went something like 1. Fits the current base 2. Looks Badass and 3. Can hit someone, not really giving a damn about survival.

>>1033858
Unless I'm mistaken, I think his weapon was 2x Ampflow A28-400-F48 running at 12s LiPo. That's a good 20hp of potential motor run through controllers that are maybe only good for 15 of that, so it's no wonder he caught fire a few times.

The real trick with these high-MOIs is to 1. Use a contactor instead of a controller and 2. Use A123 cells, as their higher internal resistance means less amps and also they don't catch fire, just get really unhappy. Works well enough for Tombstone!

I have no idea, and in all likelihood, the world will never know.

>>1033621
Rob Everhart sought out to make the most dangerous machine ever to enter the Battlebox, and he certainly succeeded. However, since he's from the old school, he never gained a proper appreciation for high-rpm high-MOI weapons, modern speed controllers and motors, and most significantly, LiPo batteries. I saw him several times in the pits removing LiPos from his frame and arcing the leads off of each other while he did it, which on these high voltage, high discharge packs is a great way to fuck all sorts of shit up.

I would have loved to have seen it fight, but Trey still has some leftover paranoia from Season 5 when Nightmare threw someone out of the roof and Lockjaw and Vladiator knocked out some of the walls. There's a big crisis going on it the community right now with respect to arena breaches, and the last thing Trey and Greg want is ANOTHER lawsuit.

So yeah, I think they were right to get passed over from a safety standpoint, but I would have rather seen it fight. From the safety of the next building over.

You're ruining my season 3 plans!

In all seriousness, the rules for the last two seasons have been pretty handwavy. As long as it doesn't LOOK or perform intentionally like entanglement to the producers, it should be fine.

Solid, braced 4mm thick titanium all the way though. It was nothing to be trifled with!

And you're right about maneuverability, I know a few guys that win out at vertical spinning matches because they're smaller, easier to control, and spin faster with harder blades. They're less effective at common bots though, so it's a tradeoff.

No size limits other than 'can your robot fit through the door'. The only person I know hwo has ever had an issue with this is Hal Rucker from Ringmaster. His robot "Crazy Susan" for season five was a little excessive

But this is a television show, and sometimes the most entertaining robots are the ones that blow themselves up =^)

That being said, the matches do get more intense every week from here.

There are a couple of approaches, but they usually take a fair amount of driving skill. One of our guys does very well with close-to-the ground horizontal discs that catch the vertical right as it starts the up-swing. The result is that they get thrown up by their own force + the horizontals.

The Blacksmith/Minotaur fight shows Blacksmith doing a pretty good job with his wedge, but the second it started fraying the fight was over. The real problem comes in with people like Minotaur who have been building the same robot for over a decade, and they've got reliability down completely.

It's only going to get worse from here.

The big concern is that the new rules are going to turn the competition into BBIQ, which is 15lbers fighting each other with an active weapon requirement. All of them end up being clones of each other's vertical spinners.

By the way, if any of you folks are in the Boston area, we have viewing parties every Thursday night at Aeronaut in Cambridge, usually with one of the big robots in attendance.

ALSO, we'll be showing off all of them this Saturday at the Boston Mini Maker Faire. Should be good fun.

A decent amount of the builders are right-wing lolbritarians, so some of the butthurt on our end has been...interesting.

>>1022376
They're going to cut the season in half for the Olympics. It'll resume after they're over; THE GOOD NEWS from the broadcast is that pushing the season back an episode means that the finale won't be hanging on it's own like an awkward dingleberry weeks after everything else, it'll actually have an episode or two before it.

>>1022514
Battlebots themselves are a little despondent when it comes to advertising. Why do you think I'm here, other than to shill for the show?

*did, not didn't. No love for Battlebots from FIRST and vice versa.

While I did, no one else on my team and very few of the other MIT teams didn't. There's always been a bias against combat robotics from FIRST all the way up to the top, and that has actually prevented MIT from having an official team until now. I'd say the biggest common factor between teams was "owning a machine shop" or "being a mechanical engineer"

For the most part, we realize that this is an entertainment sport and want to help each other put on the best fights possible. Battlebots wants us to do that too, but give us a really contradicting message by paying us to win.

>>1021586
We're flipping our shit over this. Ratings have been in the garbage and we've had like 0 engagement with a new fan base 'cause ABC has spent like $12 on advertizing. We'll see how well the numbers do this Thursday and how much of the "NEW BATTLEBOTS 8PM ABC THURSDAYS" comments got through the "wew lads what a shitty robotwars ripoff am I rite also razer"

I got a good 11" sweep with a tool-steel bar on one of my 3lbers that was less than 1/3 of the weight, I bet you could get bigger just fine. Also, scaling on these things is really messed up and entirely dependent on drive systems for each robot. There are also very few places to fight heavyweights.

>>1020274
But then you'd know who I am, senpai. I'm pretty sure most of my names are 4chan approved anyway.

Mo parts means mo things to fail. Motors weigh much more than motor controllers. and while I've seen wiring up the middle of the shaft work before, most of the time it doesn't. My preference is to have two isolated systems for top and bottom.

One of our guys has a 30lber that fights with a sword and it's always hilarious to watch, and the crowd loves it. I guess a big thing that people arn't realizing about this season is that it's a TV show about robot fighting for your entertainment, rather than robot fighting filmed for TV. Blacksmith was great as fuck to watch, but mildly effective, so that's a little what I'm aiming towards.

>>1020255
The big problem I see you having is rectifying the length of your blade with the base of your robot. You might be better off with a 2wd on top and bottom and little skid plates on the front and back to save weight and reduce footprint.

What weight class were you thinking about? 3lbs is really popular, and relatively cheap to get into.

I personally don't believe in titanium, but shit adds up, especially when you have to do desperate last-minute fixes the week before ship. That extra $50 for shipping is really worth it if it buys you more time.

We've actually had hebocons at MIT a couple of times now as a frat rush event for one of the more interesting frats. It happens a couple of other places too, it's very easy to organize in the grand scheme of things.

Yeti bought all of their wheels from Bronco to start with. Getting spares was nbd.

>>1020062
Matt's so cool irl. He's definitely a professional at this robot crap, but unlike say the Bronco guys, he's really nice and sociable.

Sorry for the late response, Tinder date.

>>1019959
Like most people, we ended up building 1.5-2. At the end, we were about 20k in the hole, but Battlebots paid us 10k to build. Other people went way less, most everyone else went way more. Some people spent 10k on titanium alone.

>>1019960
Yeti and Blacksmith are my favorites. They're dead simple as far as mechanics go, but jesus they're much more fun to watch fight than the vast majority of robots out there. I'm likely going to go with something that looks like a sword/jetfighter for next season, if there is a next season. Ratings are shiiiiiiiit.

They were very clear that if anyone wanted to pull off de-icer/present box shit again, they were all for it but we needed to tell them ahead of time. The megatento match got delayed when Lisa hung a bunch of fish hooks on the inside of the shell, and they made it abundantly clear to Bombshell that they would have a lifetime ban if there was anything inside of the box.

>>1020016
Charles literally had 3 separate frames machined for him and just had to replace the fuckered parts. He has no idea what to do with all the spares now that the season's over though.

>>1020048
He had a part to play this year, so he was a little more of a diva. I usually left the drinking when he showed up because it would turn into a "remember the old days" fest and groveling around him.

>>1020049
Yeti ends up borrowing spare parts from 5 different teams to keep it running. It's lost a lot after the first two matches, and he didn't bring any spares.

If they want to shoot me down, then so be it. Let them show the whole world their barbarity.

It won't be easy. I plan to have a high powered laser with which to blind incoming pilots if need be. As well, I will be literally streaming the entire time and I doubt, very highly, that any government in the world has the balls to murder a peaceful man in front of the whole world.

That said, a wingsuit is all I need to escape in the unlikely event of hostile fire. I will then escape utilizing escape and evasion training I went through at SERE school and my literal months of solo back-packing to safely navigate my way until I can build another Ark.

Making money is the easiest thing in the world to do. In 6 to 8 weeks I make 70,000 dollars. You're joking. Anyone poor in this world is just lazy or uncreative.

Or unmotivated. How do I make all this illustrious money so easily? I grow and distribute marijuana by the 110 plant crop. I've been doing it since 2008 and have become quite bored with the monotony. As far as legal issues, I am not interested in the laws of any nation.

Really. I could care less what the rest of humanity thinks of me. I have seen the world over and having looked around, I am rarely impressed with what I find.

Now on to the last portion of your post I agree with the hydrogen solution as I can literally manufacture it out of thin air utilizing moisture collectors and a simple lab set up.
