I've been seeing barley tea in manga and anime for years and I'm looking to try it. Can't exactly find it in most stores in the US, and haven't seen it in the whole foods stores either so I'm looking to order it on Amazon.

Any recommendations?

>buy pearl barley
>spread out on baking sheet
>roast until it turns your desired shade of brown
>allow to cool
>crack grains, e.g. using a very coarse setting on a coffee grinder
>infuse in hot water
>strain
>enjoy

What's a good shade of brown? I've never had it and don't know the shades of brown / degrees of roast and their effect on flavour.

By analogy to light and dark coffee bean roasts, I think you can make an educated guess.
I have roasted barley exactly once in my life, many years ago. It was for a brown ale or stout that I was brewing. I can't find the recipe now, but I promise it's not a difficult process. I just took them out when they started to smell good.
Hell, you can probably toast the grains in a dry pan on the stove, using a very low heat. That would certainly be more energy-efficient.

Barley tea is nothing special, any kind other normal tea is vastly superior to it. It doesn't have a specific different taste nor is it satisfying. When I was stuck switching flights in Shanghai the only café avaliable had a set breakfast that included barley tea, and that was because no other tea was available cause they were cheap as fuck chinks. So don't waste your money getting barley tea and either spend it on actual good tea.

OP here
I drink plenty of tea, actual good tea from Republic of Tea. I know a fair amount about tea from tea leaves. I just want to try something different.

You seem to be the racist, as is very common with your types. I simply don't give a shit about your fucking nations and don't want to visit them.
If you want to call me racist for disagreeing with you then you must have been shillary supporters since that's the best that they can do.
Are you still seething in your closets because Trump beat your annointed one?

Cold barley tea on a hot day is good. Hot barley tea with a meal is good. It also has no caffeine which is good

just order a pack of mugi-cha teabags off of amazon.co.jp and away you go.

in winter months it's nice served hot.
in summer, make big batches of it, cool it, bottle it in gallon or half-gallon containers and chill it in the fridge.
served ice cold it's refreshing on a stinking hot day in the same way that beer is.

Barley tea is nice and refreshing. I used to buy a big 2l bottle from the local chingchong grocer before they stopped selling it and I started making it myself. >>16738861 is right in that it's super simple and dirt cheap to make. It doesn't really make much of a difference if you use pearl or pot barley. You can also cold "brew" barley tea pretty easily, too.

I remember reading somewhere that in Korea they roast dried corn alongside the barley, which gives the tea a lighter and sweeter taste. I've always wanted to give this a try.

Is that some kind of delicasy that you pawn off on a company?

to cause confusion and shame to; make uncomfortably self-conscious; disconcert; abash: His bad table manners embarrassed her. ... to put obstacles or difficulties in the way of; impede: The motion was advanced in order to embarrass the progress of the bill.

It's fuckin gross, don't bother.

Asian places like to make big jugs of it for you, for free tea with your meal, but the barley tea is disgusting. Flavors that just shouldn't mix.

Skip it.

Wheat tea is fucking awful. Imagine flat, non-alcoholic beer. That's what it tastes like. Except I guess beer has more complexity from its fermentation, aging, and extra spices and flavors added. So I guess mugicha is more like a flat, non-alcoholic light beer.

You're getting screwed if you buy from a place that proudly carries embarrassments like this. The least you could do is buy a gaiwan and order from a beginner-friendly serious loose tea vendor like What-Cha or One River Tea; you would be saving money by avoiding health scams and flavoring gimmicks.
I was once like you, anon, but I saw the light.

I don't buy those 'super digest' or other gimmicky specialized types. I've been drinking Republic of Tea brand for about 20 years, way before those were around.
I like blackberry sage, comfort and joy, wild blueberry mostly but there's several others I drink.
