I was at Japan for one week, I ate more than I would usually do over there compared to home and I still lost 2kg walking around the whole week. I really love the walking and train convenience they have, it's all within walking range. To answer why they have high rate of diabetes I cannot have a specific idea on whether it's food cause but I can damn well sure guessing it's alcohol and lifestyle cause.
